`` America The Beautiful, But Who Are You Beautiful For

â€Å"America the Beautiful, but who are you beautiful for?† echoes across the room, a student attending public school in South Bronx shared this two-line poem with her class as part of an assignment that her English teacher assigned. The objective: a letter to be shared with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This story along with many others is found within the pages of Savage Inequalities. Jonathan Kozol is best known for his social activism in the education realm and providing a voice for the voiceless. Kozol spent much of his life as an educator, now in his 80s; Kozol continues to provide awareness to Americans through his timeless writings. Kozol argues that during the Reagan era of economics, poor and often-black students are the ones fighting for social policies that for many decades have been denied to them. Kozol begins with the examination of life in East St. Louis. All throughout this portion, he draws back on the notion that the schools in which he visited were depressing in nature, examples of this include; barbed wire fences leading up to the school, steel covered windows, and drug-free police patrol greet students every morning (Kozol, 1991). The concept of school zones are referred to as death zones in the neighbors surrounding East St. Louis, some research indicates that as much as one-third of the population lives on $7,500 a year. The racial makeup is 98% black, the community in East St. Louis has no means of garbage disposal and live in one of the heaviest polluted areas. Kozol interviewed students in the school district and asked them when school began, four students responded with answers that varied so significantly, no one was able to figure out the time for which school was actually supposed to begin at. Paul C©zanne and His Influence on Cubism Free Essays

Cubism can be, and has been, defined as the world’s first style of abstract art. From it’s lack of landscapes and foreshortening to the multitude of geometric forms, Cubist art can be quiet hard to analyze. An abundance of geometric shapes and monochromatic colors can blur the object â€Å"in focus†, and it’s lack of three- dimensionality Just exacerbates the analysis process. Artists from the same and surrounding regions a few years prior were not creating art as abstract as the Cubists. In fact, the preceding artwork was neither abstract nor ambiguous in the slightest, so why the change? Cubist art deviated almost completely from the prior art forms, and at the forefront of this new form of art was a new way of thinking sparked by scientific findings by Albert Einstein and a Neo-limitations artist by the name of Paul CZane. CZane was born in Xix-en-Provence, France in 1839 into a wealthy family, which helped him succeed in the vicious world of art. Like most artists of his time, CZane attended college to study art, but was simultaneously enrolled at the University of Xix o study law under the command of his father. Following his dual enrollment, he enrolled in the Cadmime Issue to study paintings of artists. In the years to come, CZane experienced self-doubt, going between working at his father’s banking firm and submerging himself into the critical world of art returning to Xix and going away to Paris respectively – before finally moving to Pontoons to study with Pissarro, a well- known artist. It was then that CZane realized that he was not to be accepted by the rest. 1874: the first exhibition of La Sociot Anomie Coopretire des Artistes, Painters, Sculptures, et Gravers – a group of rejected artists who soon after deemed themselves the Impressionists. CZane entered but was rejected from all of the other exhibitions except for the third. He was part of a new wave of artists who called themselves the Neo-e lementariness. L The first Neo-limitations artists were George Serrate and Paul Signal. Developed in the late 19th Century after the disbandment of Impressionist group La Sociot, Impressionists deviated from the unfinished style of the Impressionists and focused on the science of color. Their predecessors had a Ochs on color but more to convey reality through the eyes of the artist himself, objectively. Many put emphasis on the fleeting moment of time – some artists, such as Monet, used hasty dashed strokes of color on their canvas to depict such advances of time – while others focused on the perspectives of an object during different times of day – different lighting. Yet, they all had more to do with the depiction of a state of mind during an event; thus, each artist had their own personal style. The Neo- Impressionists, however, took a more scientific approach to art. They had a main Ochs on color much like the Impressionists, but, much like the Impressionists, had their own unique style. Georges Serrate was the closest of the Multimillionaires to Monet stylistically, nevertheless he differed greatly. Serrate coined his style of painting pointillism, meticulous plotting of paint in the form of monochromatic dots of equal size. 2 Scientific experiment and theory was used in Neo-limitations art, using optical principles of light and color to convey an ultimate reality. The retina of the human eye is designed to average the wavelengths into one color, thus deciphering as a result, the divisions between objects as well: form was created through dots of color as opposed to lines. 3 Paul CZane took this technique of object simplification a little bit further. CZane never aligned well with the other Impressionist painters, so much so that he removed himself from the Impressionists in 1877 (after the third Sociot exhibition) and worked in isolation. It wasn’t until almost twenty years later that CZane would publicly present his works of art. His differences with the Impressionist artists classified him as a Neo-limitations, but his style was much more radical than that of the other Neo-limitations artists. The depiction of modern life became popular during this time period and Neo-elementariness and Impressionists alike were creating work to convey such modernity. CZane, on the other hand, wanted to emphasize the difference between a painting and reality. L Techniques from the renaissance have been made commonplace thereafter. Foreshortening, the art of making an object smaller or larger to convey distance, for instance, was a major technique used by artists to create the illusion of distance, or the third dimension [z- axis], on a two-dimensional piece of canvas. Instead, subtle use of aerial perspective – usage of warm and cool colors of nature to convey the advancement and recession of objects in a painting – was common in Ccane’s work; to CZane, the composition of color was the most important aspect of art. But despite this belief in color, he studied something else on which the Cubists in the years to come would base all art: the study of the armament structures of natural forms, namely the cylinder, sphere, and cone. Many times over and over, and perhaps one too many, CZane painted Mont Conservatoire after retreating home from the grueling Parisian art scene at the time. The small land mass Just outside of his small hometown of Xix, France painted between 1902 and 1904 is depicted as â€Å"[a] solid arrangement of masses and planes. What CZane had done was simplified objects, Mont Saints-Victor and the village/ town at its base, down to planes or shapes, otherwise known as reductionism. 2 He was very much into reductionism, and though he said that the composition of color as the most important, it seems as if reductionism was Just as important to him. Formerly, artists were dealing with how to depict modern life Just as the Cubists were, but the change in depiction from that of Impressionists to Neo- Impressionists is going from life as people saw it (casual events) to the depiction of more personal moments with a radical change in color to convey emotion and mood. 5 However, the change from Neo-limitations art to Cubist art was much less conservative. In 1905, Albert Einstein and few other colleagues founded the theory of relativity in which Einstein stated that the laws of physics are the same everywhere and the speed of light is a constant. With this, Einstein concluded that no observer’s experience of time is the same. 2 Man of this era was experiencing time more whimsically: technology is booming, the car industry is starting to take off, and more intercultural interactions were taking place. Everything is relative and subjective and so were the creations of the artists themselves. A couple of years later two young artists by the name Pablo Picasso and Georges BrBraque’sncountered this problem head-on. They felt that they had to depict life as such, but how were they to do that? Well, in 1907 at the Salon d’autonomyit was because of Czacane’sketch titled â€Å"The Bathers† that young Picasso became infatuated by his work. The treatment of the nude form in The Bathers influenced the nude form in PiPicassoeLesseDemolishes’Davidsonreatly. He flattened the form much like CzaZaneid and deconstructed the forms into a few planes, geometric shapes, and angles. Picasso in LeLesseDemolishesuch like CzaZanen The Bathers gave up tired traditions of modeling and foreshortening and embraced the flat surface of the canvas before him. BrBraque’spon seeing LeLesseDemolishesell into a state of shock. He disliked the techniques (or lack of techniques in BrBraque’seyes at the time) used by Picasso, but after many months looking back on the work, BrBraque’smbraced PiPicassotyle and created a work of art similar to that of Picasso he titled â€Å"The Nude†. The two worked so closely together that it is said that their art was sometimes indistinguishable much like the art itself. This was the start of a beautiful partnership between him and Georges BrBraque’snd the start of Cubism. What people see Cubism as is the era of analytical cubism – analytical in that the art was supposed to be seen through â€Å"intellect†, not by the eye. The work by BrBraque’she called The HuHumanistst. 7t7thdDeBoston: Pearson, 2014. Portuguese, is essentially what Cubist art looked like for most of the period. It is a 46 1/4†³ x 32 1/4†³, oil-based painting on canvas painted in 1911. In a simple glimpse of the work, one can identify multiple natural-brown geometric shapes and planes overlapping one another. The outlining of the planes and shapes are painted in seemingly quick brushstrokes, thus, making it sketch-like in appearance. The planes make it seem that if touched, the painting would cut due to its Jagged and rigid look, and, today, it can be viewed in the KuCountersunkn Basel. 2 This work of art is not easily discernible, even for scholars. Here BrBraque’sery vaguely and subtly aligns the lines outlining multiple overlapping planes to create an underlying triangle to guide he viewers â€Å"intellect† down the triangle to its base. It is at the peak of the triangle where BrBraque’sas places a seemingly triangular beam (perhaps a beam of light since the seem is lightly colored brown) shining down from the top right of the canvas on the peak of the main triangle. And at the beam’s origin lies the letters â€Å"BAL† and the number â€Å"10,40†. â€Å"BAL† is shortened Portuguese for â€Å"dance† and 10,40 through historical analysis was evidently a drink tab. 2 And between the numbers and letters is the outlining of the basic geometric forms of a wine glass which, altogether, signifies that the setting is most probably in a bar. That same triangular beam also takes the â€Å"intellect† back to the underlying main triangle using subtle linear perspective to what seems to be a face shown in profile, the leftward most face, and directly in front of the face, the rightward most face. If one were to take this â€Å"intellect† down to the base of the main underlying triangle, one can see that there are many most overlapping planes and the colors have gone from light brown, up top, to dark brown on the bottom. A diagonal line from the leftward side of the triangle Juts down the canvas toward the bottom right to encompass (more like enentanglementif that ere a word) a circle with crossing horizontal lines which looks 2 Human SpSpiritt. 7t7thdDeBoston: Pearson, 2014. o Oe a guitar played by a person to which the face above belongs – few horizontal lines coming from the right side of the canvas toward the â€Å"guitar† gives the â€Å"intellect† a sign that those lines may be the performer’s arms which are strumming the strings of the guitar. To emulate the fleeting affects of time, BrBraque’slaces multiple circles and horizontal lines around the aforementioned circle and lines. What can now be identified as a possible bar-room performer, is shown in multiple exposure – this is hat he/she is shown playing (giving the location of the guitar) from a plethora of angles/viewpoints. Artists of this time were well-versed in the sciences and mathematics. The belief that an artist should be knowledgeable of science and math dates back to the Renaissance. With knowledge of EiEinsteinheory of relativity and other findings, BrBraque’sortrayed this bar-room singer with a guitar in his of her most basic form in fleeting time through the usage of gegeometriclanes for form and the overlapping and repetitive patterns of planes and shapes to portray movement through time lelettingver so quickly in one glimpse. One glimpse of this work and you see an entire performance pass by before you could even discern what had taken place on that very piece of canvas. This is exactly what BrBraque’santed in fact. Through EiEinsteinnd his cocolleague’sindings, BrBraque’sonveyed his theory of relativity and space time through this work of art. 6 The value behind the object seems to be one of concern, concern for the time in which BrBraque’snd all of humanity in America and Europe due to the ever-changing and ever-increasing pace of life. Where is all of this going to take humanity? Where are all of us while this research and discovery is taking place? To BrBraque’snd other Cubists, we are right in the middle of it. Einstein defined space-time as a mesh in which the entirety of the universe in contained, not fluid in intervals of space-time, but warped and fluxed so that the change in time is variable – not 2 probable however, because Einstein is said to have said that God would never play dice with the creation of matter. 2 Time is so variable that BrBraque’sn one work of art, in one piece of space-time has portrayed this theory to hold true in that even a bar- oomomerformer is never stationary. His or her location is capricious and our perspective of the bar-room is Just as capricious as her location Just as life and our perspective of life is ever-changing with unprecedented speed due to the advancement of technology and scientific discovery. But where is CzaZanen all of this? Czacane’segacy remains in the work of the Cubists. His soul lies in the deconstruction of the form of the bar-room performer and his/her guitar. If one compares Czacane’saintings of Mont SaSaintsiVictorhe went from nearly painting he mountain exactly as he saw it to the mountain’s basic underlying form: geometric shapes and planes. Czacane’snfluence can also be pinpointed in the multiple perspectives of the performer that BrBraque’sives us. CzaZaneiked to abstract art and so did the Cubists evidently. Also Czacane’seviation from perspective drawing, for which he is famously known, caught the interest of Cubists. He felt that a painting is not reality – it should not imitate reality but rather create reality we see/know it; therefore, a painting should not suggest depth or a third dimension. The surface of annovass two dimensional and so is art work that is to be put on any given piece of canvas, around which CzaZaneased his art work. He flattened space and emphasized decomposition and deconstruction of objects to twdimensionaleometric. BrBraque’snd Cubists took this and created what defined modern life as being perceived through multiple facets, confusing, fleeting, and analytical. Important scene to perform Essay The explorative strategies we used were physical theatre when I was being the door, and role play when Stephanie Orford took on the role of Mr Kipps. Physical theatre is when you tell the story through physical terms, and role play is when you take on somebody elses thoughts, feelings and emotions. Physical theatre helped me to understand my role and the play, for I saw how being things like a door could create tension by showing something is behind it. It also helped me understand how emotionally and physically scared Mr Kipps would have felt when he kept on hearing the banging. For the banging on the door, we decided to use a Red spot light, which started to flash on and off, to the rhythm of the banging on the door. We did this to represent Mr Kipps heartbeat, and to represent something evil and dangerous behind the door. The spotlight then went a dim white, to represent nothing, and to show the banging had stopped. This would calm the audience down, and make their tension go even higher when we started the banging again, for the white spot light would make them think there was nothing there. This scene was meant to represent the bedroom in Eel Marsh house, and how terrified Mr Kipps would have felt to be there on his own. In the next scene, we did exactly the same, and used the same explorative strategies, and everybody was in the same place, apart from this time it was Stephanie Charles who tried to open the door, and this time I did actually open, but slammed shut again. Once again we used the flashing , Red lighting to create tension and suspense in the audience. Sophie Moore still did the banging, and Stephanie Orford was not in this scene. We swapped the roles around, so everybody would have something to do, for we had too much people for that scene in the play. I do not think we should have done this though, because it would have made the audience confused. In this scene, we still thought it would be best that Sophie did the banging for me, so again we did not spoil the tension, for they would not know where it was coming from. At this point, Stephanie Charles, was walking along like Stephanie Orford very slowly and cautiously again, but this time she looked a lot more frightened than Stephanie Orford, for the banging had started again. This would have made the tension in the audience rise up even higher at a quicker pace, for they would not be expecting it, from the white spot light in the last scene that represented nothing. As she got closer to the door handle, we decided to make the banging louder and louder, to make the audience want to keep watching for they would wonder what was there, and at the same time to make them feel really frightened and shocked. This time we also decided to make Stephanie Charles reach for the door handle in an even more slower pace than Stephanie Orford did, for this would keep the audience watching and would make the tension build up higher for every second she reached for the door handle. Then to build the tension even higher, she turned the door handle even more slower, which would really keep them watching, and would make them emotionally scared and worried for Stephanie Charles. When Stephanie Charles actually did open the door, we decided to have nothing in there, to make the audience want to keep watching to see where this mysterious banging was coming from, and who was doing it. If we did have the woman in black in there, it would spoil the tension for the audience would know what to expect. By having nothing in there makes it a mystery. The explorative strategies we used was physical theatre and role play again. The role play helped me to understand how terrified Mr Kipps must of felt when he was inside the nursery room, and how it felt to have a presence with you. Physical theatre helped me to understand the fact that I was the one creating most of the tension in our performance, for in the play the banging was the rocking chair coming from behind the nursery door, and I was being the nursery room door. Once again we used a Red flashing light to represent Mr Kipps heartbeat and to go with the rythym of the banging. We thought it was important for the lighting to go with the rhythm of the banging, otherwise it would look a bit muddled up and confusing. When the door opened, I think we should have had a long, loud scream to represent the haunting of the woman in black and the death of Stella and her child on the pony and trap, for this would make the audience really scared and shocked. We could have also made the lighting a still orange, to show the creepiness and horror Mr Kipps would have felt. Red would have also been good to show these emotions, but the performance would have been more interesting with a range of colours. We decided to have the door slam shut to really make the audience startle, but would have been better if Sophie bung a bit louder, and I if emphasised it a lot better. For this, we decided to have all the lighting go completely out, to make the audience really scared, startled and worried, for they would not know what sort of presence was there with them. We used still image when we were all bent over Stephanie Orphord, because we wanted to show the most important emotions of the woman in black and Mr Kipps, so the audience could understand the story and emotions of Mr Kipps. It also creates tension. The role play helped Stephanie Orford to understand emotions of Mr Kipps, and it helped us to understand why the woman in black was haunting him. It helped us to understand the woman in blacks life story and why it was so bad for her. We decided to use Orange lighting again for when we stood over Mr Kipps, for once again it created an eerie atmosphere and was good at displaying emotions. It was also good for making our white masks stand out and good for showing the kind of tension between the woman in black and Mr Kipps. Evaluation  In the actual performance of the Woman in Black, I could see lots of different drama elemants being used.  Explorative strategies used in the woman in Black stage play.  I noticed thought tracking for when Mr Kipps was reading out the letters at Eel Marsh house which he got out of a large basket. As he read the letters in his head, a recorded voice played out loud to represent the person who wrote them, who was Jennet Humfrye. The effect this element had on the audience was that it revealed Jennet Humfryes inner thoughts to them, and makes the audience feel more involved by the drama being deepened. The audience also understood the character of the woman in black, and what her past life was like, and why she ended up becoming mad. It also marked Eel Marsh house as a really important place to the woman in black, and why she returns to this place so often. The lighting for this scene was very dim, but not completely dark. Because the light was not completely dark, it was really good for showing Mr Kipps thoughts and emotions as he read the letters, and finally found out the background to the woman in black. The dim light also makes the audience feel relaxed and calm, but at the same time a little unsafe, because it makes the scene look creepy. This also relates to the creepiness of Eel Marsh House, and the amount of hauntings it recieves from the woman in black. It also relates to the fact that the nursery is one of the most important rooms in the play, and how it would have been in real life when the woman in black actually did die. The nursery room would have brought back alot of memories to the woman in black about her child, and how her son grew up there. The recorded voice also had a slight echoe to it, which marks this voice as an important voice which has a lost connection with the child, Nathaniel. It also gives the voice a spooky quality which creates an eery atmosphere in the audience. The tone of this voice sounded quite sharp, angry and lonely at the same time. These emotions are really suitable for Jennet Humfrye, for not being able to have a proper connection with her son would of made her feel isolated from the people she really cared about, but knows her son will never know that she is really his mother. The anger and sharpness of her voice would represent how angry she is at Mrs Drablow for taking her place as a mother, and for Mrs Drablow trying to bring Nathaniel up as her own. In my performance with Sarah Butters, Adelade Jones and Emily Broad, we used thought tracking at the end, when me and Adelade were pretending to be Mr Kipps and the actor. Sarah used thought tracking to represent the tension between me and Adelade, and the anxiety and terror I felt when we spoke of the woman in black. We used thought tracking, because we thought it was effective in relating to the connection between Mr Kipps and the woman in black, and how the woman in black effected Mr Kipps sons life. This scene also shows how Arthur Kipps cannot bear to bring up his child, for his death reminds him of who caused it. We also used physical theatre in this scene, for Emily and Sarah were pretending to be coat rails. We made this obvious by hanging scarves on their arms. This looked effective for it made interesting use of a normal household object. It also helped Emily to switch to the role of the woman in black really quickly again. Mr Kipps looks quite nervous talking about the woman in black, and walks away quickly, which relates to how the woman in black affected his family and left him alone.

Ad Evaluation

The focal point of this paper is to write a 3 page essay evaluating one commercial advertisement from a popular magazine and analyze it with an evaluation of its effectiveness in light of its purpose, paying particular attention to how well its various components work together to persuade. Jean Kilbourne makes an excellent point in her portrayal of advertisement and its appearance of violence and sexually predatory nature. Blatantly sexist, implied violence and the essence of fear or dominance would be inherent in advertisement of all descriptions from lingerie, to jeans all the way to peanut butter. Jean Kilbourne’s essay shows us how much we ignore in the world of advertisement, which simply exemplifies that which we ignore in life as a whole. Her portrayal of the difference between perceptions of men and women in the various ads, including such concepts as intimacy, violence and innocence would be such as to either cause alarm or to cause us to seriously examine the route advertisement is taking in the role of human behaviors. Human behavior is altered by stimuli outside the mind, but absorbed by that same mind. It is this absorption that must be considered when understanding the human psyche. Sexual advertisement has a tendency to increase violence done by men continuously exposed to the ads and the industry continues to use these sexual images for attention magnets. The biggest problem with this now would be the fact that now teenagers and children have become a target audience, resulting in addiction toward images and brands. Jean Kilbourne’s essay is quite an informative piece. It proves that what we see and what we get are obviously gender separate, and also can be either intimidating, or thought provoking dependent upon that gender. Most, if not all, advertisement can be considered mildly offensive, no matter the implied innocence. For example, Calvin Klein’s underwear ads spark outrage to this day and yet, regardless that they are only there for a few moments or weeks even, it is enough for people to go out and buy his underwear line. This, without realizing our own actions, simply feeds the desire to continue the outrageous behaviors displayed within the advertisements. A second example, both on the feminine and masculine side of intimidation, Diet Coke advertisements of Cindy Crawford in a very short skirt drinking a Diet Coke and being ogled by men and boys of all ages and on the other side of the coin, the sweat-coated construction worker ogled by the women in their office building as he drinks the soft drink. In Jean Kilbourne’s essay she states that â€Å"First, the industry spreads the sexual images using the media regardless of appropriate types of media. She cites Paris Hilton as prime example just in the year 2005. There are no doubts that Jean Kilbourne’s criticism of our efforts to put a halt to violence and even the innuendo of violence in both feminist movements and equality based ones, would in fact be direct and to the point in her understanding of what is acceptable, and what should hardly be. The affect of these ads on the younger minds alters the landscape in such a way that we would see it in the actions of younger and younger children. For instance, the rape of a six year old girl by an eight year old on the same bus while on their way home from school as she was held down by four other boys. There are many images that continue to testify to the belief that violence against women is acceptable, that sex, in the case of the woman, cannot be proven as rape because she is a woman. There is an advertisement, in the March 9, 2006 Rolling Stone magazine on pages five and six of a man pulling a woman’s jeans off on a beach. A blatant testament of dominant sexuality, and then add to that the advertisement on page nine of four pairs of women’s legs, showing off the shoes, or showing off the smooth legs? This is no doubt a blatant approach toward masculine attention. Rolling Stone is a very obvious method of exploitation, both masculine and feminine. An advertisement further in this issue proves that with a woman whose clothing shows the curvature of her bust quite blatantly and then a large white feather pointing directly toward the cleavage. She stands there with her lashes lowered and a bottle of Skyy Vodka with a glass in her hands. Fashion and the industry that supports it would be a blatant exposition utilizing many sexual images with both teenagers and adults, usually exposing too much of the torso in their advertisement, their shows and so forth. This would constitute a blatant reinforcement of the vulnerability of women, and now, even more so, of children. Jean Kilbourne has a very good point in her critical assessment of the world of advertising and its affect on both the masculine and feminine gender. Her critical assessment should be considered a wake up call for all in that we ignore the warning signs and exploit the danger in place of fighting against it. Thus, in her essay, she proved her theory quite sufficiently in that the industry would continually uses sexual images specifically to capture the attention of people, and now, teenagers and children have become the target audience thus becoming addicted to both the images and the brand. If we do not fight as equals, then feminism has no true hold on culture in any way. This, in actuality, is of a far greater impact on the lives of men and women, as well as boys and girls. The fact that these ads continue would tell us that feminism is losing its hold on the minds of many. Ads have a tendency to mold a generation, and the portrayal of men and women in suggestive or violent poses manages a platform for strong debate. Through the study of myths help us develop an idea of what the cultures were like. It includes hints that exhibit how they lived their lives. Myth is its serious purpose and its importance to the culture (Lansford 1). Every culture has its own myth that explains about the nature of that particular culture. The Chinese culture has been around for many centuries, its myths have accumulated into varies stories of gods and their culture. China is the worlds oldest continuous civilization (Cotterel 9). Evidence show the earliest Chinese civilization to be found around 1650 B. C. The beginnings of Chinese mythology, started around the Wei and Jin Dynasties. Influenced by alchemist ideas, Taoist and Buddhist superstitions, various writers created storied about their enigmatic surroundings. The beginning of the Chinese civilization is based on mythology. One of the creation myths is about the beginning of the world. In it, the world began as an egg and cracking open, the top of the shell grew to be the sky, the lower shell became the Earth, and in the middle stepped a man named Pan-gu. Mythology of the ancient Chinese is apparent through art, music and literature. Since, there is no explanation of how the Chinese civilization began; mythology has been a way of explanation to the Chinese culture and other cultures around the world, today. Chinese mythology, as with many other cultures, has many gods and goddesses that are in charge of various things. In the Ancient Chinese culture, there are gods and goddesses for every important aspect of the peoples life, even things as unlikely as the stove god and the door god. Other deities that were important to the Chinese people were the gods of the elements such as Chu Jung, the fire god, Lei Kun, the thunder god, the wind god, and the lightning goddess. Most of the element gods devoted themselves to punishing criminals and keeping evil spirits away. There were also important gods in charge of fields such as Kuan Ti, the god of war, Kuan Yin, the goddess of compassion, TShai-shen, the god of wealth and Tsao hsang, god of the hearth. Although there gods were very important to the Chinese people, one of the most important gods was Nu wa, the mother goddess. She was a compassionate goddess who created mankind and bestowed love and creation to them. She helped her people when they were in need, like when she created rice from her own milk and blood in order to feed her people. She was very humble and a modest goddess, not wanting credit for her benevolence. The gods and goddesses of Chinese mythology were basically deities that symbolized the good and just qualities that people should imitate in their everyday life. The basis of Chinese life was a belief in harmony and balance (Williams 20). The Chinese believed in harmony with nature, and sometimes honored the spirits with gifts, feasts, and rituals. The Chinese believed the souls of the dead returned (Williams 20), a concept of Buddhism. The family held Chinese society together (Williams 20). In China, many generations of families lived together, even in the same house, and the children were taught to respect and obey their elders (Williams 20). As in all cultures, men were ? superior to women in China. Parents believed they would become gods after they died, if they had a son (Williams 21). This belief was taken fiercely to the point that the parents would kill a newborn female. A custom that the upper-class women followed was of foot binding, which was believed to make the foot appear tiny, since the culture considered small feet feminine and delicate. The most important festival in China was the Chinese New Year, it is held in the spring of each year. During this festival, offerings were given to the sprits. In China, the color white is considered the mourning color and the children showed respect for dead parents by fasting and wearing thick clothes (Williams 21). Most beliefs and customs of the Chinese culture appear from the religions of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. The Chinese culture has a long history of beliefs and customs, which are used by the generations before and now. It is highly unlikely that the generations to come would not be following the same beliefs and customs of the ancient Chinese. The origin of religion goes back to prehistoric times when the earliest people of China sought answers to the same basic questions that have baffled primitive men over the world: what is the unseen force that brings darkness and light, winter and summer, drought and rain, life and death; what must men do to appease this force? (Schafer 57) Ancient China has three main religions Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. Confucius was concerned mostly with laws made by people, and whether people were naturally good or naturally evil. In contrast, the followers of Lao-tzu believed people were guided by universal laws, not human ones. This was the basis of Taoism (Williams 18). Taoists tried to live a life of simplicity and meditation close to nature. Taoism was mystical and influenced by ancient Chinese folk religion. Its followers used magic as well as prayer and diet to seek eternal youth (Williams 19). Taoists were peaceful people who generally lived peaceful lives. Buddhists follow the teachings of Buddha (born 563 B. C. ), a north Indian prince who devoted his life to a search for personal peace, or enlightenment. The name Buddha means enlightened one. He believed that by giving up worldly desires, such as for fine food and clothes, a blissful state called nirvana could be achieved. In nirvana there was freedom from sorrows of the world. Indian belief as that time held that people were reborn many times. Persons who had lived badly in former lives might be born in an animal or insect form. Buddha said that by reaching nirvana, this endless cycle of rebirth could be broken (Cotterell 27). Buddhists follow an eight-fold path, this is like a code by which they live. Confucianism came in earlier than Taoism and Chinese Buddhism. The so-called Confucian classics were, in fact, complied long after the death of Confucius by disciples of his disciples, and were edited and interpreted in Han times by government scribes; but they purport to reflect the views of the great sage of antiquity on history, religious rites, morals, and standards of behavior. The state officers of Han times accepted these interpretations and associated them with the standardized pagan nature worship of state cult as a part of the acceptable way of life for a Han gentleman. We in the west sometimes call this way of life, which includes both reverence for the ? ancient books and the ? ancient gods, ? Confucianism (Schafer 60-61). Confucianism flourished in China as so did the other religions. The Chinese were inquisitive people, always inventing and always wondering how things worked. It is only logical for them to generate religions that explain how life is and how it will be in the afterlife. In Chinese mythology, myths and legends deal with aspects of human nature, human relations and social life (Owens). Chinese myths use human traits, like emotion, to convey lessons. The myth on the creation of man clearly depicts the basics of a Chinese myth. After Pan-gu, creator of the world, died and his body transformed into different elements of the Earth, Nu wa, the dragon goddess, came down from heavens and admired Pan-gus creation. In order to honor Pan-gus sacrifice to the Earth, Nu wa decided to create humans. She started to make them out of yellow clay, but since it took much of her strength, she dipped a rope into the mud and when she took it out, the drips became people. Her clay and mud people were not alive, so her heart took pity and she breathed her divine breath into them. She also whispered thoughts of love and creation into their ears and told them to reproduce. The people made of yellow clay became the rich and the people Nu wa made of mud became the poor. This myth explains many aspects of human life. It explains how the social classes came to be and also human emotions. Nu wa shows human emotions like honor, when she was determined to let Pan-gus death not be in vain; in compassion, she breathed her divine breath into each and every human. This myth represents human relations because Nu wa put ideas of love and procreation into the human races mind. These Chinese myths explain how the good and bad came to be and how a person should live a happy a fulfilling life. Mythology is not a subject that should be ignored. It is an important subject that should be learned and understood by all cultures so that as a world, we can come to understand each other better. The first step in hatred is fear. Fear of the unknown can generate more hate than anyone could possibly fathom. If everyone became educated about other culture, there would be little to know unknown, and there would probably be less hate in the world. Mythology, the study of myths, gives people an insight to others dreams, hopes, and their fears. We all have hopes, dreams, and fears. By learning about other cultures hopes, dreams, and fears we can feel more connected to each other and reach out. Mythology is a key element in keeping peace without shedding blood. Family Expecations Essay

I have found that family expectations are both problematic as well as helpful as I have grown and matured.   My family’s expectations revolve around our shared histories and aspirations as well as their perceptions of what I might be successful at or enjoy in life.   On the other hand, my life outside of my family has developed to a point where I gain encouragement and confirmation about my abilities and projections from other sources, such as my peers, my work, and through socializing. My ultimate priorities are up to me and only I can determine whether or not I am meeting my expectations no matter what my family believes.   That being said, pressures and expectations from my family has helped me to identify certain paths that I might prove successful for me in the long term.   My family usually has my best intentions in mind when they discuss their expectations for me and that can be a comforting and confidence inspiring motivation.   Additionally, if I have doubts about meeting my expectations, my family is there to advise me on what they feel I should or should not be doing in a particular situation based on their wisdom and previous experiences. In contrast, I often feel that my family’s expectations for me are based around what they knew of me as a younger adult or child.   Instead of asking me about my current goals and projects, often times they will revert back to telling me what my dreams were as a kid, or even worse, what dreams they had for me when I was a kid.   I understand that they are trying to be optimistic and positive influences on me, but at the same time I have grown up outside of my family and have created new ideas and goals for my future; not the necessarily the future that they always have had envisioned for me. Prioritizing family expectations is a balancing act for me because I want to make my family proud while at the same time living life according to my own principles.   This can be a difficult terrain to traverse, but ultimately it leads to more open and honest discussions about the best way to live life.   In our family, these discussions can at times become heated, but they are always interesting and we come out of them with newfound respect and hopes for the future. I have found that sometimes not living up to family expectations has been the most fruitful decisions I have personally made in my life.   Making my own choices and following my dreams in spite of my family’s expectations has paid off.   My family is proud of me for having the courage and the ambition to follow through on what I believe in.   If that is in fact their ultimate expectation for me, then I have found the balance necessary to surpass those expectations in the face of all obstacles.

W hen hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is added to liver, catalase catalyzes a reaction in which the hydrogen peroxide is broken down into oxygen gas (O2) and liquid water (H2O).Hydrogen peroxide is a toxic chemical that is produced as a byproduct of many normal cellular reactions, so it is crucial that catalase in the liver breaks the hydrogen peroxide down into the two harmless substances of oxygen gas and liquid water. The hydrogen peroxide must be quickly degraded or converted, and catalase accomplishes this task because one molecule of catalase can deal with six million molecules of hydrogen peroxide in one minute. Enzymes and the temperature of their environment are particularly important to the human ody because â€Å"Many of the reactions which represent the digestive process would need far higher temperatures than we are able to maintain safely if enzymes were not involved† (166). The prediction in the hypothesis is based on the concept of denaturation. As Pearson Baccalaureat e: Standard Level Biology Developed Specifically for the IB Diploma states, â€Å"Reactions which use enzymes do have an upper limit. That limit is based on the temperature at which the enzyme (as a protein) begins to lose its three-dimensional shape due to intramolecular bonds being stressed and broken.When an enzyme loses it shape, including the shape of the active site, it is said to be denatured† (75). Due to denaturation, the liver placed in 100? C will have the smallest reaction height because at this temperature catalase will begin to denature. Because â€Å"reactions with or without enzymes will increase their reaction rate as temperature (and thus molecular motion) increases†, the liver placed in 0? C, 7? C, and 19? C will have small reaction heights, but the heights will increase as temperature increases (75). The liver placed in 37?C will have the greatest reaction height because â€Å"human catalase works at an optimum temperature of 37? C, which is approx imately the temperature of the human body†. Although this lab is using beef liver instead of a human liver, the optimum temperature for beef liver should be similar to that of humans. The predictive graph on the previous page represents how as the temperature of beef liver originally increases, the height of the reaction increases as well due to an increase in molecular collisions. At a certain temperature, the catalase will reach its optimum temperature and have the greatest height of reaction.However, as the temperature continues to increase the enzyme will begin to lose its shape and denature, so the height of the reaction will decrease. This lab will be using beef liver, which contains the specific enzyme catalase, and by placing the liver into different temperatures it will be assessed how catalase performs under certain conditions. After the liver has been placed in different temperatures, hydrogen peroxide will be added to each piece of liver, and by measuring the heigh t of the chemical reaction it will be determined which temperatures catalase performs the best in.Reactions with a high height will represent catalase quickly and efficiently breaking down the hydrogen peroxide, and reactions with a low height will represent catalase slowly and inefficiently breaking down the hydrogen peroxide. This lab will serve as a model for the role of enzymes in the human body, and will outline the importance of enzymes for the human body. Independent Variables The independent variable is the temperature of the liver, and it will be measured in ? C. The different temperatures used will be 0? C, 7? C, 19? C, 37? C, and 100? C. Wait until the temperature has reached 37? C. You can use and electric water bath if one is available. 5. Obtain beef liver and cut the liver into 10 slices which are approximately the same size. Weigh each sl ice on an electronic beam balance to ensure they are the same weight. 6. Obtain 10 test tubes and place them into a test tube rack. Label 5 test tubes with a number from 1-5, and repeat for the remaining five test tubes. 7. Obtain 15mL of hydrogen peroxide and a graduated cylinder. . With forceps, place a piece of liver into each of the test tubes. 9. After the liver has been placed in the test tubes labelled 3, place a thermometer into the test tube rack and wait for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, pour 2mL of hydrogen peroxide into each of the test tubes, observe the reaction, and label the height of the reaction after 1 minute with a Sharpie. (This is the experiment at room temperature. If you have prepared a water bath at 19? C then use it instead). 10. Remove both of the test tubes labelled 1 from the test tube rack, place them in the ice bath, and wait for 5 minutes.After 5 minutes, remove the test tubes from the ice bath, add 2mL of hydrogen peroxide into each of the test tubes, observe the reaction, and label the height of the reaction after 1 minute. 11. Remove both of the test tubes labelled 2 from the test tube rack, place them in a different test tube rack and place this rack into the fridge. Place a thermometer into the fridge as well. Wait for 5 minutes, and then read the temperature of the fridge and remove the test tubes. Pour 2mL of hydrogen peroxide into each of the test tubes, observe the reaction, and label the height of the reaction after 1 minute. If you have prepared a water bath at 7? C then use it instead). 12. Remove both of the test tubes labelled 4 from the test tube rack, place them in the warm water bath (37? C), and wait for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, remove the test tubes from the warm water bath, add 2mL of hydrogen peroxide into each of the test tubes, observe the reaction, and label the height of the reaction after 1 minute. 13. Remove both of the test tubes labelled 5 from the test tube rack, place them in the hot water bath (1 00? C), and wait for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, remove the test tubes from the hot water bath, add 2mL of ydrogen peroxide into each of the test tubes, observe the reaction, and label the height of the reaction after 1 minute. 14. In 1889 he married Julie Naschauer, daughter of a wealthy Jewish businessman in Vienna. The marriage was unhappy, although three children were born to it. Herzl had a strong attachment to his mother, who was unable to get along with his wife. These difficulties were increased by the political activities of his later years, in which his wife took little interest. These political activities culminated in 1896, when Herzl published Der Judenstaat, an informational pamphlet in which he proposed that the Jewish question was a political question to be settled by a world council of nations. Although the liberal magazine he worked for tried to prevent the publication of Der Judenstaat and never so much as mentioned it in its columns, Herzl would not be deterred. He gathered a small coterie and set out to convene the First Zionist Congress that same year. ETHICAL ISSUES IN LAW ENFORCEMENT - Essay Example The case presented says that on being a police officer and being sent to an accident spot, I discover that my car is involved in the accident. It appears that my spouse is involved in the accident. However, moving closer, I learn to my shock, that my spouse is badly hurt; and her illegitimate lover is also in the car. I am devastated on learning that I have been cheated upon. Both of them lay in badly tattered conditions and are literally on their death beds, begging for help and treatment. Now, both the individuals----my spouse and her lover---are on their death beds and I can save only one, since at least one of them would bleed to death. At this juncture, I need to take the call as to whom I would like to save; since time is a constraint and we could lose them any minute. This is certainly one of the most testing times, in my personal and professional lives intertwined together and I need to prove my mettle in this testing time. My objectivity is questioned at this point, since I need to play the role of a police professional and a husband, who is cheated upon and whose spouse and her lover are on their death beds. Besides this, I also need to act at the nick of the moment and take the decision fast.At this moment of uncertainty and chaos, hurt and confusion, I decide that I would save my spouse. This is because I still love her unconditionally and would not allow any deception or other causes to hamper my love and devotion. However, here, I would have to also retain my objectivity and humanity. Therefore, I hand over my phone to a passerby and ask the person to call up the emergency ambulance. This would ensure the safety of the other individual as well. The passengers-by assure to help me out and cater to his needs. I hand over my walkie-talkie to one of them and rush to the hospital with my spouse. I stay in touch with him, with regard to the progress at the other end. This way, I am certain thta the other individual would recoup soon.Meanwhile, I take up all the necessary steps to ensure that my spouse gets treatment. I rush her to the hospital, and perform small first aid steps on the way. I offer moral support. In spite of her guilt, I try to make her feel safe and secure. The wrong-doings can be sorted out later. However, life is more important at the moment.Meanwhile, I also correspond with individuals and deputy officers at the spot, about the health of the other individual. I see to it that both emerge safe. However, I would definitely confront the individual and m y spouse once they get better and would demand an explanation. The court further held that it is unlawful under Sec 2 of the Suicide Act 2010 and if any person assists another in euthanasia or su icide, he or she will have to be prosecuted for homicide. Further, on the issue of whether necessity constitutes and defence against prosecution in the case of assisted suicide, as in the case of Purdy Vs United Kingdom (2010) AC 45, the court ruled that the blanket prohibition on euthanasia or assisted suicide cannot be construed as disproportionate interference with Article 8 of ECHR 1950, which protects the privacy of a citizen. The court further
